The SanDisk 520 SATA SSD uses a 2.5-inch, 7mm cased form factor and connects over SATA III (6 Gbps), backwards compatible with SATA I and II. The drive is built with SanDisk TLC 3D NAND, has no DRAM, and uses an SLC cache.
Performance by Capacity
According to SanDisk’s datasheet, sequential read speed is rated at up to 560MB/s across all four capacities. Sequential write speed varies by capacity: 510MB/s on the 500GB model, 520MB/s on both the 1TB and 2TB models, and 525MB/s on the 4TB model.
Random read performance is rated at 78K IOPS on the 500GB model, 89K IOPS on both the 1TB and 2TB models, and 85K IOPS on the 4TB model. Random write performance is rated at 73K IOPS (500GB), 74K IOPS (1TB), 75K IOPS (2TB), and 76K IOPS (4TB).
Reliability and Endurance
Endurance is rated at 300 TBW for the 500GB model, 400 TBW for the 1TB model, 700 TBW for the 2TB model, and 1,000 TBW for the 4TB model, according to SanDisk’s JEDEC client workload calculations. All four capacities carry the same 2.25 million hour MTTF rating, based on SanDisk’s internal Telcordia stress testing, and a 5-year limited warranty (5 years or the maximum endurance limit, whichever comes first, per SanDisk).
According to SanDisk, the drive has no moving parts, which SanDisk states makes it shock resistant. SanDisk rates the drive for 1,500G shock at 0.5ms half-sine, 5 gRMS operating vibration (10-2000 Hz, 3 axes), and 4.9 gRMS non-operating vibration (7-800 Hz, 3 axes).
Power
Average active power ranges from 0.97W (500GB) to 1.09W (4TB), according to SanDisk. Max read operating power is listed between 1.49W and 1.8W, and max write operating power between 1.7W and 4.65W, both varying by capacity. Slumber power is rated between 31mW and 34mW, and DevSlp power between 9mW and 10mW.
Software and Monitoring
The drive ships with SanDisk’s free Acronis True Image for SanDisk software for migrating data from an existing drive, though SanDisk notes additional cable or hardware may be required and is sold separately, and the license must be redeemed within 90 days of purchase.
A downloadable SanDisk Dashboard app, available for Windows only, lets users monitor the drive’s performance and storage space, and keep the drive’s firmware updated, according to SanDisk.
Environmental Ratings
Operating temperature is rated at 0°C to 70°C, and non-operating (storage) temperature at -55°C to 85°C, according to SanDisk. SanDisk notes the SSD box package itself is rated up to 60°C, and that non-operating storage temperature does not guarantee data retention.
Dimensions and Certifications
The drive measures 100.50mm long, 69.85mm wide, and 7.0mm high, weighing 34.5g, according to SanDisk (dimensions may vary by plus or minus 0.15mm, weight by plus or minus 1g). Listed certifications include BSMI, CE, FCC, KCC, RCM, TÜV, UL, VCCI, and the drive is RoHS compliant.
