All three are officially licensed M.2 SSDs for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles, and ship with a heatsink built for the M.2 slot on those consoles. SanDisk notes that for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro system software compatibility, buyers should check the SanDisk Optimus GX PRO product page.

Let’s check out the specs and features of the SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P NVMe SSD.

Specs and Features

Every capacity uses the M.2 2280 form factor and a PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe 1.4 interface. The interface is backwards compatible with PCIe 3.0 x4, 3.0 x2, 3.0 x1, 2.0 x4, 2.0 x2 and 2.0 x1. The drives use SanDisk TLC 3D NAND, and both a DRAM cache and the SanDisk nCache 4.0 SLC cache are present.

The 1TB and 2TB models use the M.2 2280-S3-M single-sided layout, while the 4TB model uses the M.2 2280-D5-M double-sided layout.

Performance

Sequential and random figures are quoted by SanDisk as “up to” numbers from internal testing, and vary by capacity:

  • 1TB: Sequential Read up to 7,300MB/s, Sequential Write up to 6,300MB/s, Random Read up to 800K IOPS, Random Write up to 1.1M IOPS
  • 2TB: Sequential Read up to 7,300MB/s, Sequential Write up to 6,600MB/s, Random Read up to 1.2M IOPS, Random Write up to 1.1M IOPS
  • 4TB: Sequential Read up to 7,300MB/s, Sequential Write up to 6,600MB/s, Random Read up to 1.2M IOPS, Random Write up to 1.1M IOPS

Sequential figures are measured at Queue Depth 8 with 1 thread, and random figures at Queue Depth 32 with 16 threads.

Endurance and Warranty

Endurance is rated at 600 TBW for the 1TB model, 1,200 TBW for the 2TB model, and 2,400 TBW for the 4TB model. SanDisk calculates these using the JEDEC client workload (JESD219).

MTTF is rated at up to 1.75 million hours, which SanDisk states is estimated from a sample population using Telcordia SR-332 stress part testing at 25°C, and does not predict an individual drive’s reliability or constitute a warranty.

All three carry a 5-year limited warranty, which runs to 5 years or the maximum endurance (TBW) limit, whichever occurs first.

System Compatibility

Listed system compatibility is PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Windows 10 or later. SanDisk notes that PC compatibility is not tested nor endorsed by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Dimensions and Weight

The 1TB and 2TB drives measure 80mm x 24.46mm x 9.89mm and weigh 24g. The 4TB drive measures 80mm x 24.46mm x 10.31mm and weighs 30.4g. SanDisk states length and width may vary by ± 0.5mm and weight by ± 10%.

Environmental and Regulatory

  • Operating Temperature: 32°F to 185°F (0°C to 85°C)
  • Non-Operating Temperature: -40°F to 185°F (-40°C to 85°C)
  • Operating Vibration: 5 gRMS, 10-2000 Hz, 3 axes
  • Non-Operating Vibration: 4.9 gRMS, 7-800 Hz, 3 axes
  • Shock: 1,500G @ 0.5 ms half-sine
  • RoHS Compliant: Yes
  • Certifications: BSMI, CAN ICES-3(B)/NMB-3(B), CB-Scheme, CE, FCC, KCC, Morocco, RCM, TÜV, UL, VCCI, UKCA

SanDisk notes that operating temperature is the temperature reported by the drive itself, which is expected to read higher than ambient when the SSD sits inside a system, and that the box package is rated up to 60°C. Non-operational storage temperature does not guarantee data retention.

SanDisk also lists an 8TB model, SDSG81800TAH, in the same series, rated at up to 7,200MB/s sequential read, 6,600MB/s sequential write, 1.2M IOPS random read and write, and 4,800 TBW. At the time of writing, Amazon US has listed this model – but is not in stock. It should be available in the coming days.
